Learning Objective

Teams design subtle behavioural nudges that guide customers toward better decisions while preserving their full freedom of choice.

How to Play

Setup

  • Choose a real customer behaviour you want to encourage (completing setup, saving more, choosing a sustainable option).
  • Provide a nudge toolkit: defaults, reminders, social proof, framing, friction and salience.
  • Give each team a design canvas and an ethics checklist.

Rules of play

  • Teams design two or three nudges for the target behaviour.
  • Every nudge must pass the ethics checklist: transparent, easy to opt out, in the customer's interest.
  • Teams predict the behavioural mechanism and how they would measure success.
  • The room scores nudges on effectiveness and respect for autonomy.

Debrief

  • Which nudge was most effective while still feeling fair?
  • Where did a nudge start to feel like a shove?
  • How would you A/B test whether the nudge truly helped customers?

CX Principle Reinforced

A nudge changes behaviour by altering the choice environment without removing options or changing incentives. Smart defaults and timely reminders are classic examples.

The defining test of an ethical nudge is whether it serves the customer's own goals and remains easy to ignore. Nudges that fail that test are dark patterns wearing a friendlier name.
