Amazon has filed an application with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking approval to build and operate a new low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite constellation purpose-built for direct-to-device connectivity. The proposed network, which Amazon intends to begin deploying in 2028 pending regulatory approval, would comprise 5,105 satellites and deliver voice calls, messaging, data, and emergency services directly to consumer mobile devices — no specialist hardware required.
