Pepkor to Acquire Fintech Firm Shop2Shop in South Africa

Pepkor, one of Africa's largest retailers, has agreed to acquire South African fintech Shop2Shop, embedding payments and money transfers directly into its retail stores.

What happened

Pepkor, one of Africa's largest retail groups, has agreed to acquire South African fintech Shop2Shop, a payments and money-transfer platform built for informal and township retail networks. The move brings digital payments and remittance capability directly into Pepkor's retail footprint, rather than treating fintech as a bolt-on partnership.

Shop2Shop's technology allows small, often cash-based traders and their customers to send money and make payments through existing retail touchpoints. By bringing this capability in-house, Pepkor is positioning everyday transactions — not just merchandise sales — as a core part of how it engages shoppers.

Why it matters

For customer experience and behavioural design, this is a story about turning frequency into loyalty. Informal retail customers visit stores often, sometimes daily, for small-basket purchases. Layering payments and transfers onto that existing behaviour gives retailers a reason to stay embedded in a customer's routine well beyond the point of sale, without asking shoppers to change habits or download a new app.

It also reflects a broader shift among retailers across emerging markets: rather than competing purely on price or assortment, they are competing on utility and convenience woven into daily life. When payments, transfers and retail sit under one roof, the retailer becomes harder to substitute — a structural form of loyalty that outlasts any single promotion or discount.

The Renascence take

The interesting part of this deal isn't the fintech itself — it's what it does to the psychology of the customer relationship.

Most loyalty programmes try to manufacture stickiness through points and rewards bolted onto a transaction. Pepkor's move does something more durable: it makes the retailer part of the customer's financial infrastructure. Once a shopper is sending money or paying bills through a store they already visit, switching costs stop being about discounts and start being about disrupting a habit. Retailers chasing loyalty elsewhere in MENA and beyond should ask a sharper question than "how do we reward repeat visits?" — it's "what everyday utility could we own that makes leaving genuinely inconvenient?" That's a service-design problem, not a marketing one.
