The Diminishing Sensitivity Effect describes the well-documented psychological phenomenon whereby people's emotional and perceptual responses to changes in value, price, or magnitude become progressively weaker as the reference point moves further away. In plain terms: the difference between £10 and £20 feels enormous, whilst the difference between £1,010 and £1,020 feels almost negligible — even though the absolute change is identical. Our minds are not calculators; they are comparators, and they compare in proportions rather than absolutes.

This principle sits at the heart of Kahneman and Tversky's Prospect Theory, which demonstrated that the psychological value function is concave for gains and convex for losses — both curves flattening as they move away from the reference point. The underlying mechanism is rooted in the same neurological principle that governs sensory perception: just as a candle makes a dramatic difference in a dark room but is imperceptible in bright sunlight, a financial or experiential increment registers powerfully when the baseline is low and barely at all when the baseline is already high.

Why It Happens

The brain is wired for relative, not absolute, evaluation. Weber's Law — originally formulated to describe physical sensation — holds that the just-noticeable difference between two stimuli is a constant proportion of the original stimulus. Behavioural economists extended this insight to economic and experiential judgements. When a customer has already committed to a £2,000 holiday, an additional £80 upgrade feels trivial; the same £80 spent independently would feel significant. Airlines and hotel chains have long exploited diminishing sensitivity, whether deliberately or intuitively. When Emirates presents a Business Class upgrade at the point of checkout — after a customer has already committed to a £900 long-haul fare — the incremental £300 feels proportionally small. The same £300 presented as a standalone product would feel substantial. The sequencing of the offer is doing the behavioural work.

Subscription Tiers

Software and streaming platforms routinely structure their pricing tiers so that the jump from Free to Basic feels large, but the jump from Basic to Premium feels modest. Spotify's tier architecture, for instance, anchors users to the Premium price early in the journey, making annual plan discounts feel like meaningful savings even when the absolute difference is small. The reference point is set deliberately to flatten the sensitivity curve at the moment of upgrade.

Loyalty Rewards and Points

Loyalty programmes frequently suffer from diminishing sensitivity in reverse — to their own detriment. When a customer has accumulated 48,000 points, the prospect of earning another 200 points on a single transaction generates almost no excitement. Marriott Bonvoy and similar programmes attempt to counteract this by introducing milestone bonuses and status thresholds that reset the reference point, creating fresh sensitivity at each new tier boundary.

Service Recovery

In complaint handling, diminishing sensitivity explains why a £10 goodwill gesture feels generous after a minor inconvenience but wholly inadequate after a significant service failure. Practical Design Principles for CX and Behavioural Teams

  • Sequence upsells after the primary commitment. Present upgrades, add-ons, and premium options only after the customer has anchored to a larger reference price. The incremental cost will feel proportionally smaller and conversion rates will improve.
  • Reset reference points at tier boundaries. In loyalty and subscription programmes, introduce milestone moments — status upgrades, bonus multipliers, exclusive access — that create a new, lower reference point and restore sensitivity to incremental rewards.
  • Calibrate service-recovery gestures to failure magnitude. Train frontline and CX operations teams to match compensation proportionally to the severity of the failure, not to apply a uniform goodwill policy that will feel inadequate at higher levels of dissatisfaction.
  • Use chunking to preserve perceived value. Rather than presenting a total cost as a single large number, break it into meaningful components. Each component is evaluated against a smaller reference point, preserving sensitivity to the value being delivered.
  • Test price anchoring sequences in digital journeys. A/B test the order in which price information is revealed. Showing a higher anchor — a premium tier, an original price, a competitor benchmark — before the target price consistently increases willingness to pay by flattening sensitivity at the point of decision.
The practical implication is straightforward: in customer experience design, the order and context in which value is presented matters as much as the value itself. Diminishing sensitivity is not a flaw to be corrected in customers — it is a structural feature of human perception that CX teams can either ignore, to their cost, or design around, to their considerable advantage.
