What happened

Polygon Labs has become part of the second phase of the Bank of England's Digital Pound Lab, working alongside Nobo Finance and Dun & Bradstreet to trial near-instant cross-border settlement using digital pound infrastructure. The initiative forms part of the central bank's ongoing exploration of how a retail digital pound might function in practice, with this stage focused specifically on international payments and settlement speed.

The Digital Pound Lab is a testing environment set up by the Bank of England to let technology firms and financial institutions experiment with potential designs and use cases for a UK central bank digital currency (CBDC), ahead of any decision on whether to actually issue one. Polygon's participation brings blockchain-based settlement rails into the mix, alongside partners working on identity and business-data verification.

Why it matters

Cross-border payments remain one of the slowest, costliest parts of global finance, typically involving multiple correspondent banks, manual reconciliation and settlement delays measured in days rather than seconds. A successful trial of near-instant settlement within a CBDC framework would demonstrate that programmable, blockchain-based infrastructure can sit inside a regulated central bank system rather than only in crypto-native markets — a meaningful signal for how digital currencies could reshape institutional payment rails.

For digital transformation leaders, this is a live test of whether distributed-ledger technology can be integrated into core public financial infrastructure without compromising the oversight and stability central banks require. The outcome will inform not just the UK's own digital pound deliberations, but the broader conversation among central banks worldwide about whether and how to modernise settlement systems.

The Renascence take

It's tempting to read this purely as a blockchain story, but the more interesting question is behavioural: even if the technology proves settlement can happen in seconds, will institutions and end users actually trust and adopt a new rail fast enough to matter?

Technical proof of near-instant settlement is the easy part — central banks and their partners have shown this repeatedly in sandboxes. The harder problem is designing the surrounding experience: how banks explain the change to corporate treasurers, how errors and disputes are handled when settlement is irreversible in seconds rather than days, and how confidence is built before volumes shift. Any organisation tracking this pilot should be asking less "can the pipes handle it" and more "what does trust look like when money moves this fast."

FAQ

Questions we get on this topic

It's a testing environment set up by the Bank of England allowing technology firms and financial institutions to experiment with potential designs and use cases for a UK central bank digital currency, ahead of any decision on whether to issue one.

Polygon Labs is contributing blockchain-based settlement rails to test near-instant cross-border payment settlement within the digital pound framework, working alongside partners focused on identity and business-data verification.

Nobo Finance and Dun & Bradstreet are participating alongside Polygon Labs in this stage, which is focused specifically on international payments and settlement speed.

Cross-border payments typically involve multiple correspondent banks and settlement delays of days rather than seconds, so demonstrating near-instant settlement within a regulated CBDC framework would signal that blockchain-based infrastructure can operate inside central bank systems, not just crypto-native markets.
