Uber, Baidu Launch Driverless Robotaxis in Dubai via Apollo Go

What happened

Uber has switched on driverless taxi rides in Dubai, integrating Baidu's Apollo Go autonomous vehicle service directly into its app. The service has launched in the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim areas, with Uber and Baidu signalling plans to expand the robotaxi fleet to thousands of vehicles across the emirate over time.

The rollout marks one of the most visible commercial deployments yet of Apollo Go outside mainland China, and it deepens Uber's existing strategy of plugging third-party autonomous vehicle operators into its marketplace rather than building self-driving technology in-house. Riders requesting a trip in the covered zones will be matched with a driverless Apollo Go vehicle through the standard Uber app flow.

The move builds on Dubai's broader push to position itself as a testbed for autonomous mobility, with the Roads and Transport Authority having set out ambitions to have a meaningful share of journeys in the emirate made by self-driving vehicles over the coming years.

Why it matters

This is a significant test of whether autonomous ride-hailing can move from pilot to everyday utility. By embedding Apollo Go inside an app riders already trust and use for human-driven trips, Uber lowers the barrier to adoption: customers don't need to download a new app, learn a new interface or actively seek out a robotaxi — the technology simply appears as another option in a familiar booking flow.

For operators and policymakers, the launch is also a signal about how autonomous mobility will likely scale globally: through partnerships that pair a technology provider's vehicles and safety case with a network operator's demand, payments and dispatch infrastructure, rather than each player trying to own the full stack. Dubai's willingness to host this integration reinforces its ambition to be a proving ground for autonomous transport policy and public trust-building in the region.

The Renascence take

The headline is "driverless taxis," but the real story is trust engineering. Most coverage will focus on the technology; the harder problem Uber and Baidu are solving is behavioural — getting a first-time rider to sit in the back seat of a car with nobody driving, and to do it through an interface that already feels ordinary.

Embedding the robotaxi inside an existing, trusted app is a textbook behavioural-economics move: it borrows credibility from the familiar Uber experience to soften the psychological friction of a genuinely novel and, for many riders, faintly unnerving service. The choice of Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim as launch neighbourhoods matters too — starting with a contained, predictable geography lets both companies control the variance in the experience while confidence is still fragile. The operators who get autonomous mobility right won't be the ones with the best sensors; they'll be the ones who sequence disclosure, control and reassurance carefully enough that riders barely notice they've crossed into a new category of service. Anyone scaling this beyond a pilot zone should be watching not just uptime and safety metrics, but hesitation points: cancellations after matching, time-to-first-tap, and whether riders opt back into human drivers once the novelty fades.
