AI Travel Agents Challenge Hotels' Direct-Booking Gains

Accor grew first-half profit despite softer travel demand, even as AI-powered booking agents emerge as a new intermediary that could erode a decade of direct-booking progress in hospitality.

What happened

Accor has reported growth in first-half profit despite a broader softening in travel demand, underscoring the resilience of its diversified hotel portfolio even as market conditions cool. The results land alongside a separate but related development reshaping the distribution landscape: AI-powered travel booking agents are emerging as a new intermediary layer between hotels and guests, threatening to erode the direct-booking gains hospitality groups have spent roughly a decade building.

The two threads are connected by a shared question facing hotel groups: as AI assistants increasingly handle search, comparison and booking on behalf of travellers, will guests still land on a hotel's own website and loyalty programme, or will an algorithmic intermediary once again capture that relationship — and the commercial and data value that comes with it.

Why it matters

Direct booking has been one of the hospitality industry's clearest customer-experience wins of the past decade — better rate transparency, richer loyalty engagement, and first-party data that powers personalisation. AI travel agents risk re-intermediating that relationship just as brands were beginning to own more of the guest journey. If travellers delegate discovery and booking decisions to an AI assistant, the moment of brand choice shifts upstream, away from the hotel's owned channels and into an interface hotels don't control.

For behavioural economics and service design, this raises a practical question: how do you design trust, incentives and friction when the "customer" making the booking decision is increasingly a software agent rather than a person browsing a website? Loyalty perks, rate framing and nudges built for human decision-makers may simply not register with an AI intermediary optimising on different criteria.

The Renascence take

Accor's steady profit growth in a soft market shows operational discipline is paying off — but it also buys time that shouldn't be wasted. The AI-agent shift is not a distant threat; it's a distribution-channel disruption arriving at the same speed personalisation and mobile booking once did.

Most hotel groups will respond to AI travel agents the way they responded to OTAs a decade ago: by trying to out-market them. That's the wrong instinct. The winning move is to make direct channels legible to machines as well as humans — structured, API-accessible rate and loyalty data that AI agents can read and prefer, not just polished websites that only people can appreciate. The brands that treat AI agents as a new distribution partner to be designed for, rather than a threat to be defended against, will keep the guest relationship; everyone else will rediscover, painfully, why they fought so hard for direct bookings in the first place.

Questions we get on this topic

Accor posted growth in first-half profit despite a broader softening in travel demand, pointing to resilience in its diversified hotel portfolio.

AI travel agents are software-based assistants that handle search, comparison and booking on behalf of travellers, potentially becoming a new intermediary that captures the guest relationship hotels have worked to bring in-house.

If AI assistants make the discovery and booking decision upstream, guests may bypass hotel websites and loyalty programmes entirely, shifting the moment of brand choice into an interface hotels don't control.

Renascence argues hotels should make direct-channel rate and loyalty data machine-readable and API-accessible so AI agents can read and prefer them, rather than simply out-marketing the new intermediaries as they did with OTAs.
