Agentic AI set to expand beyond contact centres into HR, ops

New research finds most organisations already using agentic AI plan to extend it from customer support and IT into HR and back-office operations.

What happened

New research indicates that most organisations currently using agentic AI intend to broaden its reach beyond contact centres and IT departments into HR, operations and other back-office functions. The finding, reported by No Jitter, suggests that early deployments — largely focused on customer-facing support and technical workflows — are increasingly seen as a springboard for wider enterprise-wide automation.

The research points to a shift in how businesses view agentic AI: not as a narrow tool for resolving customer queries or automating IT tickets, but as infrastructure capable of taking on more autonomous, decision-making roles across an organisation's internal operations.

Why it matters

For CX leaders, this signals that agentic AI is moving from a contained pilot in the contact centre to a cross-functional capability that could reshape how internal service is delivered to employees as well as customers. When HR and operations teams adopt the same agentic tools that already handle customer interactions, the behavioural expectations set in one channel — speed, autonomy, resolution without escalation — start to bleed into every other part of the organisation.

This also raises the stakes on governance and trust. Agentic systems that can act, not just respond, need clear boundaries, especially as they move into sensitive domains like HR, where decisions affect people's employment, benefits or grievances rather than a product return or billing query.

The Renascence take

The expansion story is being told as a technology adoption curve, but the more interesting question is behavioural: what happens when an organisation trains employees and customers alike to expect agentic — rather than human — resolution as the default first response?

Most coverage of agentic AI expansion treats it as a capacity question — can the technology handle HR and operations as well as it handles support tickets? The real question is a trust question: every time an autonomous agent acts on someone's behalf without a human check, it either builds or erodes confidence in the system as a whole. Contact centres have spent a decade calibrating when to hand off from bot to human; HR and back-office functions are about to relearn that lesson from scratch, often with less forgiving stakes. Operators expanding agentic AI should treat each new domain as a fresh trust experiment, not a copy-paste of what worked in support.

FAQ

Questions we get on this topic

It found that most organisations currently using agentic AI intend to expand its use beyond contact centres and IT into HR, operations and other back-office functions, according to research reported by No Jitter.

Early agentic AI deployments have largely focused on customer-facing support in contact centres and technical workflows within IT departments.

Because agentic systems can act autonomously rather than just respond, moving them into sensitive domains like HR requires clear boundaries, since decisions there affect employment, benefits or grievances rather than routine service requests.

As HR and operations teams adopt the same agentic tools used in customer service, behavioural expectations such as speed and autonomous resolution set in one channel are likely to extend across the whole organisation, raising the stakes on trust in each new domain.
