SCMP redesigns print and digital news experience for AI era

South China Morning Post has relaunched its print and digital reading formats, restructuring content presentation and navigation as AI summaries and generative search reshape how audiences consume news.

What happened

The South China Morington Post has relaunched its print and digital reading experience, redesigning both formats to reflect how readers now consume news alongside AI tools. The Hong Kong-based publisher frames the update as a deliberate shift away from simply producing more content and towards rethinking how that content is structured, presented and navigated by readers.

Details of the specific design changes are limited in current reporting, but the underlying rationale is clear: as AI-generated summaries, chat interfaces and generative search increasingly mediate how audiences find and digest news, publishers are being pushed to redesign the reading journey itself rather than treat AI as a bolt-on feature.

Why it matters

For customer experience and service-design practitioners, this is a useful signal from outside the usual retail or banking case studies: it shows a legacy content business treating the reading experience — sequencing, layout, navigation, format — as the primary lever for staying relevant in an AI-saturated market, rather than competing purely on volume or speed of production.

It also reflects a broader behavioral reality. When AI tools can summarise or answer on a publisher's behalf, the remaining value proposition is the experience around the information — trust, context, ease of navigation and format choice. That is a direct parallel to CX teams elsewhere grappling with AI-mediated discovery: the product or article no longer needs to just exist, it needs to be designed for how people now actually arrive at and move through it.

The Renascence take

Most coverage of "AI and media" fixates on generation — chatbots writing headlines, summarising articles, replacing journalists. SCMP's move points to a quieter, more durable battleground: experience design as the differentiator once generation itself becomes commoditised.

The real story here isn't that a newsroom used AI — it's that a publisher recognised content is no longer the moat, format is. When any tool can summarise your article in a sentence, the value shifts entirely to how the human reading journey is sequenced, paced and trusted. Any service business watching AI eat into its "output" should take the same lesson: stop defending the thing you produce, and start redesigning the experience of encountering it. The operators who win the next phase of AI disruption won't be the ones generating the most — they'll be the ones who made receiving it feel deliberately, humanly better.
