Amazon closing in on CPG retail leader Costco

What happened

Amazon is reportedly narrowing the gap with Costco in consumer packaged goods (CPG) retail, according to reporting circulated across trade outlets. The coverage points to a shift in how everyday shoppers discover and purchase household staples, groceries and repeat-purchase items — categories long dominated by Costco's warehouse membership model.

While the underlying reporting does not detail the specific metrics behind the claim, the framing suggests Amazon's e-commerce and subscription ecosystem is increasingly competing head-to-head with Costco's in-club experience for the same wallet share: recurring, high-frequency purchases of packaged goods.

Why it matters

CPG purchasing is one of the most habit-driven categories in retail — decisions are often made on autopilot, anchored to convenience, trust and prior routine rather than active comparison shopping. Any sign that Amazon is closing in on Costco signals a shift in where those habits are forming: away from the physical, bulk-buy ritual of a warehouse trip and toward algorithmic discovery, subscribe-and-save mechanics, and frictionless reordering.

For service designers and CX leaders, this is a reminder that loyalty in repeat-purchase categories is rarely won on price alone. It is built through the removal of friction at the point of habitual decision-making — search, reorder, delivery reliability — and through the behavioral cues (default subscriptions, personalised recommendations, membership psychology) that keep a channel top-of-mind before the customer even feels a need.

The Renascence take

The real contest here isn't Amazon versus Costco on price or range — it's two different behavioral models competing for the same habitual purchase moment.

Costco has built its dominance on a ritualised, effortful experience — the member trip, the bulk mindset, the treasure-hunt aisle — that manufactures perceived value through scarcity and community. Amazon competes by removing the ritual entirely, replacing it with anticipatory convenience: reorder prompts, subscription defaults and predictive discovery that require no trip at all. If Amazon is genuinely closing the gap, it says less about assortment or price and more about the fact that convenience-led habit formation is beating effort-led loyalty. Operators in this space should stop assuming that membership psychology is a permanent moat — it only holds if the in-person experience keeps generating enough perceived reward to outweigh the near-zero friction of a one-click reorder.
