Roughly 80% of Marketing, Engineering, and IT Leaders Say Manual Validation Is Blocking AI at Scale

What happened

A new industry survey finds that roughly 80% of marketing, engineering and IT leaders now point to manual validation — not AI's ability to generate content, code or outputs — as the primary obstacle to scaling AI across their organisations. According to reporting by CustomerThink, the bottleneck has shifted: AI systems can produce work far faster than human reviewers, approvers and compliance checks can verify it, leaving validation as the rate-limiting step in enterprise AI adoption.

The finding suggests that for most organisations, the technical ceiling on AI generation has effectively been lifted, while the governance and quality-assurance layer around it has not kept pace. Leaders across three distinct functions — marketing, engineering and IT — converge on the same diagnosis, indicating this is a structural issue rather than a department-specific one.

Why it matters

This points to a maturing phase of enterprise AI adoption: the conversation is moving from "can AI do this?" to "can we trust and approve what it does, fast enough to matter?" When review cycles lag behind generation speed, organisations effectively cap the value of their AI investment — throughput gains at the input stage are absorbed by friction at the output stage, and the promised efficiency never reaches the customer or end user.

For leaders running digital transformation and AI programmes, the implication is that scaling AI responsibly now depends less on model selection and more on redesigning validation itself — building review workflows, risk thresholds and approval structures that can operate at machine speed without abandoning human oversight where it genuinely matters.

By the numbers

  • 80% of marketing, engineering and IT leaders surveyed identify manual validation, rather than AI generation capability, as the main barrier to scaling AI in their organisations.

The Renascence take

It is tempting to read this as a technology problem awaiting a technology fix — better tooling, faster dashboards, more automation around the automation. But the real issue is behavioral: organisations have not yet redesigned who is accountable for trust, and at what threshold a human needs to intervene.

Most companies are trying to bolt faster review onto an approval process designed for a slower, scarcer era of content and code — and that mismatch, not the AI itself, is what's throttling scale. The fix isn't more validators or more dashboards; it's tiering risk so that low-stakes outputs move at machine speed and only genuinely consequential decisions get routed to a human, with clear, pre-agreed criteria for which is which. Operators who treat validation as a design problem — not a staffing problem — will be the ones who actually capture the productivity AI promises.
