Rivo raises $3.1m to end banks’ inertia tax on savers

What happened

UK fintech Rivo has raised £2.5m (around $3.1m) in a pre-seed funding round to build technology that automatically moves savers' money into higher-yield accounts. The startup's proposition is squarely aimed at what it frames as an "inertia tax" — the gap between what savers could earn and what they actually earn because switching accounts is effortful, and most people simply don't do it.

Rather than asking customers to research and manually transfer funds each time a better rate appears, Rivo's model automates the switching process itself, positioning the product as a direct intervention against the behavioural friction that keeps deposits parked in low-interest accounts long after better options exist.

Why it matters

Rivo's pitch is a textbook application of behavioural economics to a mainstream financial product. Status quo bias — the well-documented tendency to stick with a default option even when switching carries clear upside — is one of the most reliable predictors of consumer behaviour in banking. Incumbent providers have historically benefited from this inertia rather than designed against it, since retained low-rate deposits are cheaper to fund than deposits chasing best-buy tables.

For service designers and CX leaders, the case is a reminder that friction is never neutral: it always favours someone. When a provider removes the effort of switching on the customer's behalf, it converts a passive default into an active, ongoing decision made by the system rather than the individual — a shift with implications well beyond savings accounts, from insurance renewals to subscription pricing.

By the numbers

  • £2.5m pre-seed funding raised by Rivo
  • $3.1m approximate equivalent value of the raise

The Renascence take

The interesting part of this story isn't the funding figure — it's the business model's implicit bet that automating a good decision on a customer's behalf is now a viable product category in its own right, not just a feature bolted onto an existing bank.

Most financial institutions still treat switching friction as an operational inconvenience to be minimised for compliance reasons, rather than recognising it as a designed behavioural lever that quietly protects margin at the customer's expense. Rivo's model flips the incentive: automation becomes the product, and the provider's commercial success depends on continually finding customers a better deal rather than defending a static one. The lesson for incumbents isn't to copy the feature — it's to ask honestly which of their own defaults survive only because switching is hard, and what happens to loyalty once a competitor makes it effortless.
