Persona Bingo
Persona Bingo is a creative game that combines bingo mechanics with customer persona development. Participants fill bingo cards with traits, needs, or behaviors associated with different customer personas. This game encourages a deeper understanding of various customer segments.
Learning Objective
Players can recognise the traits, needs, and behaviours that define distinct customer personas — and notice when they're projecting assumptions instead of evidence onto a segment.
How to Play
Setup
Create bingo cards filled with customer traits, needs, and behaviours (e.g. "price-sensitive", "researches heavily", "values speed over choice"). Prepare a deck of short persona vignettes — realistic mini-profiles drawn from real data where possible.
Rules
- The facilitator reads a persona vignette aloud.
- Players mark any trait on their card they believe applies to that persona.
- After each vignette, players defend one marked trait with evidence from the vignette — unsupported guesses are challenged.
- First to a complete line calls Bingo and must justify the full line.
- Play continues so multiple personas are explored, not just the winning card.
Debrief
Reserve ten minutes — the goal is evidence, not stereotypes. Ask three questions in order:
- Which trait did you mark on assumption rather than evidence from the vignette?
- Where do your real personas drift into stereotypes that data wouldn't support?
- Pick one persona. What is the single need you most often design past?
CX Principle Reinforced
Personas only work when they're grounded in evidence. Well-built personas align teams on who they serve, but they decay into harmful shortcuts when stereotypes fill the gaps — the representativeness heuristic makes a vivid, typical-seeming profile feel accurate even when it isn't. Forcing players to justify each trait builds the discipline of segmenting on real needs and behaviours, so personas guide design instead of caricaturing the customer.
