- Audit your primacy moments. Map the first three touchpoints of every major journey — onboarding, first purchase, first service call — and ask whether they are as intentional and impactful as your best touchpoints elsewhere. If onboarding is generic, the long-term memory anchor is weak from the outset.
- Engineer your endings. Every journey should have a designed close: a thank-you note, a loyalty reward, a personalised message, or a small unexpected gesture. The ending need not be expensive — it must be memorable. A handwritten card from Zappos or a surprise upgrade from a hotel front desk costs relatively little but occupies the recency position permanently.
- Compress or enrich the middle. Where the middle of a journey cannot be shortened, consider inserting a peak moment — a point of genuine delight or surprise — that can compete for recall. This draws on the related peak-end rule to create an additional memory anchor.
- Use follow-up communications strategically. Post-experience emails and surveys arrive when the recency effect is still active. A well-timed follow-up that highlights the best moments of a journey — rather than asking customers to score every step — reinforces positive memory consolidation.
- Test sequence, not just content. When running A/B tests on customer journeys, vary the order of touchpoints, not only their content. A benefit communicated first or last will be recalled more reliably than the same benefit placed in the middle of a message.
